Compulsory
Attendance in College
On
my first day of class in an American university, I discovered that there are
many differences between universities in US and in my country. One difference
hit me immediately when the professor walked into the classroom dressed in
casual pants and a sports shirt. Then he sat down, and I received a second
shock. He sat down on the desk, not behind the desk. The biggest shock happened
when he passed out a piece of paper listing the requirements of the class. I
learned that I was not allowed to miss any classes! In my country, professors
do not know or care if students attend lectures, but in the United States,
professors actually call the roll at the beginning of each class meeting. In my
opinion, compulsory attendance in college is completely inappropriate for two
reasons.
College
students are adults, not elementary school children. They have a lot of
knowledge and skills
that are not owned by
elementary students because they are more
independent than Elementary School students. Therefore, students should be able
to think rationally. It means that
students are able to face and solve all kinds of problems logically, and do not
take actions that clearly will only harm themselves and other people. Students
must also be critical where students do not just accept things, but also ask to
what extent is the credibility of something. In fact, not only to the stage of
questioning credibility, but as a student, he must be able to prove the
credibility of a thing in a logical way. In addition, they must think far
ahead. That's what at least students need to do as early as possible. Not only
see the next few days, but at least students are able to plan their actions for
the next year.
Students
often have other obligations such as jobs and family. Students often have other obligations such
as work and family. Even though they are not smart and have mediocre
achievements in school, children who are diligently studying without being told
can make their parents proud. Not only learning school lessons, but also other beneficial
knowledge. Everyone must be able to become an established and independent
person when entering adulthood. It would be much better if you were able to
achieve stability and independence before reaching adulthood. From being
independent and well-established, someone can make his little family happy,
parents, extended family, and even many people outside his family
To
summarize, attendance in college classes should be optional. Students may
already know the material that the professor will cover. Sometimes the
professor lectures on material that is in the textbook, so students can read it
on their own time. Therefore, in my opinion, compulsory attendance in college
classes should be abolished.
